Why Addiction Treatment at a 'Men’s Only' Facility?

After 23 years of treating both men and women who suffer from drug addiction and alcoholism in California, our parent facility Sober Living by the Sea created Sunrise Recovery Ranch to provide our male clients with a highly structured and supportive program in a closed environment located in the beautiful California foothills.  The goal of Sunrise Recovery Ranch is to give the chemically dependent or alcoholic man the best possible chance at achieving long-term recovery by creating a solid foundation in sobriety.

Giving Our Men the Best Chance at Recovery

Most people who have researched drug treatment programs are aware that there is a positive correlation between time spent in an addiction treatment facility and successful long-term sobriety.

Another correlation that the addiction industry has documented is the positive relationship between attending a gender-specific primary care program and the likelihood of long-term sobriety.  According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse and Addiction (NIDA), men and women with substance abuse problems require different treatment and prevention approaches.

At Sunrise Recovery Ranch in Southern California, our expert addictions treatment clinicians have created a highly structured, supervised, and supportive environment in a spiritually inspiring location in Riverside.  The men who are participating in Sunrise Recovery Ranch's addiction treatment program will find themselves in a peaceful and friendly vacation-like environment while they are receiving state-of-the-art treatment for alcoholism or drug addiction on a consistent basis.

Receiving addiction treatment in a men's only program provides the recovering alcoholic or addict the benefit of working together and forging caring bonds of support and accountability with other recovering men.  The men can focus on their sobriety for 30, 60, or 90 days and build an excellent foundation that will help them overcome the urge to relapse when they graduate to less supervised care in our extended care, transitional work, or outpatient programs.

Men Experience Addiction and Alcoholism Differently

Research suggests that men and women experience alcohol and drug addiction differently.  Not only do they have different biological responses and co-morbid factors, but they also have separate reasons for turning to drugs and alcohol in the first place.

Men are often struggling with anger management or defiance, whereas women often bring trauma or social issues to their recovery process.  Separating men and women during the initial stage of primary addiction treatment helps the different genders deal with their issues head-on, without any distractions or uneasiness.  The all-male staff at Sunrise Recovery Ranch also lends itself to the treatment of men because they have all experienced their own recovery from drug addiction or alcoholism.

Gender-specific treatment process groups also help patients discuss highly sensitive and personal issues that are unique to their gender.  Men benefit from being able to form a cohesive social network with other recovering males.  In men-only groups, men can concentrate on their recovery process without worrying about social approval and the impression they may be making on others.  They feel safe to discuss topics and memories that are uncomfortable to disclose in a co-ed group.

Given a variety of social factors in addition to these biological and social differences, men and women respond well to gender-specific recovery programs.
