Many men who come hear to our rehab facility have the capability of being great fathers, brothers, husbands, and sons but have lost their way due to the powerful rush of a cocaine high and what it has tricked their subconscious into believing: that life without cocaine is not enjoyable. 

Men who continually relapse even though they have the best of intentions are merely being tricked by their primal midbrain which has become so confused by the pleasure of cocaine (or crack cocaine) use that it has mistakenly equated cocaine with "survival" based on the immediate rush of pleasure. This primal midbrain has hijacked the frontal cortex's ability to make sound long term decisions because it is in charge of our basic survival over the next few minutes and therefore the man who is addicted to cocaine will over and over make a bad decision to relapse much to the confusion and disappointment of his parents, kids, wife and others who love him.

The thing about cocaine that our treatment team has to overcome is that the rush is so intense and predictable that men who've become dependent on it know that no matter what frustrations they are facing in their lives, they can turn to cocaine (or crack cocaine) and change the way they are feeling (albeit very temporarily). 

Another aspect that frustrates the recovery process is that there is a time period after the cocaine use is stopped during which the man doesn't think he can enjoy normal life pleasures.  This has to do with brain chemicals and the extremely high levels of dopamine that are released during the drug's use against which life's simple pleasures can't "compete."

Education and Structure

Once we explain to the men in treatment what is going on inside them, they begin to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Here's the bare bones of what happens when a man enters treatment here:

• He is in a highly monitored environment and can't obtain the drugs (and is tested frequently)
• He becomes educated about the phenomenon of addiction and how it has affected his outlook on life  and he will realize that he will soon enjoy life more without chemicals (after receiving treatment)
• As the drugs physically leave his system he participates in near constant therapeutic processes and esteem building physical activities to re-build his strength and work on inner issues
  
• He becomes well versed in the tools that help him prevent a relapse when he experiences triggers that cause him to crave drugs and has become part of a fellowship of recovering people in the applicable 12-Step Program
